Day 22 / 20th Feb
Suratthani to Khao Phanom
Got up and looked out of the train window, it was lush green,
farms, jungle.... looked lovely. Got down at Suratthani, asked for directions to
Krabi... people kept saying it was far away :-) We wanted to avoid the big highways so took 4133
to Khian Sa and further to Phrasaeng. It was very hot, so rested for some time,
had cantaloupe powder with ice and water :-) first time for all of us. The roads were excellent,
smooth and with a hard shoulder for two wheelers. Took 4037 to Chai Buri and finally
called it a day at Khao Phanom 30 kms befor Krabi, after having done 126km. We stayed
at a very cute little resort, very friendly staff and clean rooms. Went for dinner,
the young guys at the next table were very curious and we tried to have a conversation
with them, they offered us the beer and whiskey mix they were having, we declined
and had some nice hot noodle soup.
We read a bit about Krabi and found that it was a regular
tourist town and unless we had time for scuba diving or rock climbing on the island
cliffs it could be avoided. Our next destination was Trang.
Today we got a glimpse of the agricultural produce in this
area, two main crops were rubber and oil palm. We saw huge trailers carrying palm
oil seeds and also raw rubber mats. Must have been 1000's of hectares. People here
are very fond of their cars, they were all modified in some way or other. All looking
brand new, Toyota pickups and SUV's were the most common.
